The RevOps hire you never make

Somebody at your company already does RevOps. They were just hired to do something else. Usually it's you, at night.

You know the job even if you've never written it down. Someone builds the pipeline report on Sunday so Monday's meeting has numbers. Someone chases reps about stale deal stages. Someone reconciles what the CRM says against what the reps say, preps the forecast, and quietly fixes the fields before the board call. On a 5–15 rep team there's no headcount for any of it, so it gets done in the margins by the most expensive person in the room — the founder or the VP who was supposed to be selling. If you've ever googled "fractional RevOps," this essay is about you.

What the market is selling

The market has noticed you too, and it's selling hard. It's worth looking closely at what each pitch actually assumes.

Rox — freshly valued at $1.2B — sells "revenue on autopilot": agent swarms that research accounts and update the CRM. Read the architecture and you find it's warehouse-native. The agents ride on top of the Salesforce and Snowflake you keep paying for underneath. Your silos get orchestrated, not removed — and the stack that made ops work necessary in the first place stays on the invoice.

Salesforce Agentforce promises agents that read pipeline, update records, and generate forecasts. Also true — after Data Cloud is provisioned, permissions are configured, and an admin sets the agents up, at an add-on price of $125–150 per user per month on top of a $175 Enterprise seat. The RevOps work doesn't disappear. It becomes agent-wrangling, which is still a job, which still needs a person.

Attio and the flexible AI-native CRMs sell you the building blocks: objects, automations, a system your ops person can shape to your process. It's genuinely good software for teams that have an ops person. "Flexibility you configure" is the RevOps tax wearing a nicer shirt — someone still has to do the configuring, and the maintaining, and it's going to be you, at night.

Notice the pattern: every RevOps-automation pitch on the market assumes a RevOps function already exists to run the automation. That's fine for the mid-market companies these products are actually built for. For a team too small to hire the function, the assumption is precisely the problem. You can't automate a team you don't have.

Remove the work, don't automate it

So we took the other path: don't automate the RevOps tasks — remove the reasons the role exists.

The reports exist because someone has to assemble the picture. On one Deal Memory, you ask the pipeline directly: "Which deals slipped this week, and why?" — answered in plain language from real data. No dashboard to build, no analyst to brief, no admin to configure the question. The CRM hygiene exists because humans forget to type. Here the record writes itself from every email, call, and document — high-confidence updates applied automatically, the rep approves the rest. The data-entry job isn't done faster; it mostly isn't there. The forecast prep exists because the number needs defending. Here the forecast runs on the evidence in the record and gets scored against what actually closed. And the playbook — the thing a good RevOps hire would eventually build — assembles itself from your own closed-won deals as an objection library and a set of winning plays.

The math

Now the math, since the whole point of this pain is that it's a budget line you're carrying invisibly. A Revenue Operations Manager averages about $129K base in 2026 (Glassdoor; the range runs $102K–$164K, and AI-ops specialists go far higher). The software route isn't cheaper: Agentforce-on-Salesforce lands at $300+ per user per month before the admin who runs it, and the assembled point-tool stack runs about $330 per rep per month with you as the glue. Against that: $50 per seat. A 5-rep team pays $3,000 a year for the platform where the ops function is just what the agents do.

The RevOps hire you never make, and the stack you never buy to keep them busy. That's the budget line this product deletes — and the nights it gives back are yours.
