The stack tax: we itemized the receipt

Every few months a founder shows me their sales stack with genuine pride, and they should be proud — it's usually a smart list. Superhuman for email. Granola in every meeting. Calendly on every signature. Notion holding the playbook. Gamma for the decks. Slack for the deal chatter. Apollo feeding the top of the funnel. HubSpot keeping the record. Every tool best-in-class or close to it. Nobody made a bad decision anywhere on the list.

What the stack actually costs

Then I ask if they've ever added it up. Nobody has. So we did — list prices, modest tiers, no Gong, no AI SDR, sources linked at the bottom. Here is the receipt for one rep, per month:

Tool The job $/rep/mo
SuperhumanInbox$30
GranolaNotetaker$14
CalendlyScheduling$16
Google WorkspaceDoc storage$14
NotionNotes / wiki$20
GammaDecks$15
Slack Business+Team chat$12.50
AlignedDeal room$29
ApolloProspecting$79
HubSpot Sales Hub ProCRM / the record$100
Total — 10 vendors3+ disconnected memories≈ $330

That's roughly $3,960 per rep per year. For a 5-rep team, about $19,800 a year — before HubSpot's mandatory $1,500 onboarding fee, before Apollo credit overages, and long before anyone buys Gong, where the platform fee alone runs $5,000–50,000 a year before the first license.

And the numbers above are the conservative version. In the two years we've tracked this receipt, almost every line has crept up: Notion moved its full AI behind the $20 Business tier, Slack raised prices when it bundled AI, Apollo's real cost lands at $150–400 per user once credits are counted. The stack tax has a built-in escalator.

The part that matters more than the money

Here's the part that matters more than the money, though — the reason I think of it as a tax and not a bill. A bill buys you something whole. This receipt buys ten tools that have never met. The Granola summary doesn't update the HubSpot record. The Superhuman draft doesn't know what the prospect objected to in the meeting Granola transcribed. The Gamma deck doesn't know what's in the contract sitting in Drive. Ten subscriptions, and every handoff between them is performed by the same integration engine: your rep, copying and pasting between tabs at $100K+ a year of fully-loaded cost. The subscriptions are the visible half of the tax. The invisible half is bigger.

The market has noticed, which is why "replace 15 tools" is now a pitch you'll hear from several vendors. Read the architecture before you sign. Rox — a $1.2B company — deploys its agents on top of the Salesforce and Snowflake stack you keep, so the receipt doesn't shrink; it gains a line. Consolidating the interface is not the same as consolidating the cost, and neither is the same as consolidating the memory — and the memory is the thing you actually need consolidated, because that's what lets the email know about the call and the deck know about the objection.

The honest comparison

The honest comparison, spelled out:

One honesty note, because it makes the rest of the table believable: on prospecting data, treat us as a parity replacement for the Apollo line, not an upgrade — our Prospecting Agent sources and enriches, and you approve every send. The lines where the one-memory difference is decisive are email, meetings, docs, decks, the deal room, and the record itself.

The price isn't the product

A sixth of the price is the headline, but it's not the product. The product is one memory instead of three — the handoffs your reps stop doing are worth more than the $16,800 a 5-rep team saves.
